Assault On The Eyes
For years I have fought against putting squishy little silicon lenses on my eyeballs. The really freak me out. Not because I have a problem with touching my eye, but because I've seen contact lenses roll up into the back of people's eyes. I've seen my elementary school principal put his finger into one of those said person's eyes to pull out the lost contact and that was disturbing. I saw another friend have issues with her lens and proceed to rip her cornea and have to wear an eye patch for a week, waiting for it to heal. Did I want any part of it - not if I could help it.
Yet now, I find myself going against all reason and on Friday morning went in to see an optomitrist to get fitted for lenses. I enjoy playing sports but I don't play as well without my glasses on. I don't play as well with my glasses on either because they are cumbersome. Andrew has said that he would totally support me if I wore sport goggles - I'd sooner get a root-canal done than wear those.
So after 1.5 hours of testing, trying on and taking off multiple pairs of contact lenses I had just about had it. BUT WAIT. There's more! The doctor wanted to check and make sure that the back of my eyes were healthy so I had my eyes dialted for the first time ever. I have never really felt that I couldn't see. My vision is on the whole pretty good. The difference between my vision avec or sans glasses is the difference between regular and HD TV. However, after getting my eyes dialated, I truly felt like I knew the meaning of vision impaired. I actually had to go lie down for 30 minutes because I felt that everything I looked at was blurry. It's a wonder that I made it home at all.
Anyway, needless to say, my vision is still pretty great and I'm trying out the contacts. I can't say that I love them or even like them. They are purely functional and I doubt that I will wear them too much unless out of necessity. I dread going back to get the exam done next year. I really loved the doctor. She was super nice, thorough and explained everything to me. It's just that after 1.5 hours in that office, I felt as if someone had taken my eyes out, played ping pong with them, and then put them back in. Pain!
