Shopping With Dad

It’s been a big blessing to me, being able to travel to and from work every day with my pops. Well, most of the time we talk but some of those early mornings – boy – we just cruise and say hi and bye at our drop points. We're still waking up at that time! I’ll truly miss it when I’m gone and some days he turns to me and says, “I’m going to miss this”. Man, that gets me choked up every time.

Anyhoo – Dad needed to buy a new latch for our backyard gate – it busted so he naturally wanted to be Mr. Fix-It. He was adamant about going to Home Depot which is a good 20 minute drive away. However, Rona (brand spankin’-new) was a 2 minute drive away and I always go there to kill time (yes, I too love checking out the latest and greatest power tools and home reno stuff).

So I tried to convince my dad that we should go to Rona. I told him it’s new, it’s huge, it’s close by so we save on gas, it’s got everything he needs and it’s super organized, it’s Canadian (haha - I know, I need help “the Canadian How-To People”). In other words, much better than Home Depot. Yet he went soooooo reluctantly, arguing the entire time even until we got to the front doors of the place that we should be going to Home Depot. Then he walked in.

He was so amazed but because he had put up such a fight, he just looked around and said, “not bad” and hurried to find the replacement latch. So then I asked, “Do want to just go to the check-out now or do you want to look around?” He adamantly said “No- lets pay and go.”

While standing in line he started to look around at all the stuff on display close by and I asked him, “do you need something else?” He replied, “No.”

Then he looked around some more and said to me, “You know, I swear we need something for our front garden, but I just can’t remember what it was.” So for the last time I asked, “Do you want to look around and see if anything jogs your memory?” “OK!”

Hahaha – it was as if a child was unleashed into a candy store. Yes, we started off in the garden area (one end) and made our way all the way over the other, combing the place. The whole time he said, “Wow – this place is so much better than Home Depot – I can come here on my lunch break – it’s so close – it’s so nice – it’s so big!”

Oh man – we didn’t end up buying anything but the latch and of course, we didn’t actually need anything for our garden. But the smile on my dad’s face when he left the place – priceless. So as we pulled out of the parking lot, he looked back with a wistful face – wishing he could stay longer. I asked him, “Now are you going to trust me the next time I want to advise you about these things?” I love my dad and his silly ways.
