Irksome

So The Salvation Army obviously takes a lot of donations from people and it's great to see that people are still in such a giving mood provided that things aren't so stable economically. However, today I ran into a problem which leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.

Our Social Services office closes at 4pm. I'm still in office because I'm working on things that can't be done during the day due to running around so obviously, the office light is on because I'm ploughing away at this stuff.

There was a very adamant person knocking on the door as if she was going to knock it down. I was on the phone doing a reference check for one of our bell ringers. I couldn't answer the door, looked at the time and saw that it was after 4 anyway, and continued on the phone with my interview.

She seemed to have walked over the corps building and found someone there who then proceeded to call me and tell me that this person wanted to donate something and insisted on talking to someone. So I had to wrap up my reference check quickly & hop outside to talk to this lady.

She was no lady. I saw her and said, "I'm sorry, I was on the phone and because the office closes at 4pm there is no one else who could open the door". She looked at me very sweetly and said, "It's ok. OBVIOUSLY you don't want my donations so I"m going to take them elsewhere."

"But..."

"CLEARLY YOU DON'T WELCOME DONATIONS HERE SO I'M TAKING THEM SOMEWHERE ELSE"

Arrrrrrrrghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Many words ran through my head which will never come out my mouth or on to this blog but I was pretty upset. I'm thankful for donors but this one, I can honestly say that I am not thankful for her attitude. I just kept my mouth shut, and walked back in the office. It's sad because normally if I could, I would have opened the door - but then if she came at 6am and the door wasn't open, would she still freak out because the congregation was busy with the early morning prayer meeting?

Why is it that the donations should only be when it's convenient for you but not for me? Do we go door to door for our Red Shield Appeal from 10pm to 6am just because we're almost guaranteed to find everyone at home? Heck No. I wonder how this "lady" would feel if I did that to her.

If you donate, do you expect a person to take it no matter what because YOU are doing a good thing? That's what I felt this person was doing today - it's irksome - completely irksome. I pray God will help me settle down - maybe blogging has already helped. I think the attitude of giving is just as important as the attitude of recieving.
